Biographical / Historical

Pākolea at Palama Settlement is a youth development program designed for children aged 9–15 in the Kalihi-Pālama area. Launched as a pilot project in 1968, the program focused on improving academic achievement, positive social behavior, athletic skills, physical wellness, and community cohesion. Through individualized learning plans, behavioral support, competitive sports training, and nutritional education, the program fostered growth and reduced harmful behaviors. Teams and individuals were evaluated using academic progress, social behavior metrics, and athletic performance, with recognition given at an annual awards banquet. The program emphasized structured support from staff and volunteers, and active participation from families and community members.
